5.28.11

"Fragmented Fran"
5 Rds for Time:
9 Thrusters 95#
9 Pullups

As rx'd: 3:41

I went about 90% on this WOD, focusing on my squat depth during the thrusters.  I'm trying to be able to feel that point where my depth reaches the standard so I'm not using any more energy than necessary.  Either way, this time is better than my PR in Fran, so hopefully that means I'm getting stronger.

I then decided to do the alternative WOD 5 mins after finishing with a couple other guys.

3 Rds for Time
800m Run
75 Air Squats
50 Abmat Situps

As rx'd: 15:00

That makes 8 WODs in 6 days - by far the most training I've fit in a week.  The good thing is I still feel great.  I think a lot of it stems from staying dialed in with my diet.  I'm enjoying seeing how my times in the Regional WODs compare to the numbers the competitors are putting up this weekend.  After Day 1, I would have been 27/39 competitors.  Not bad, but today is when the WODs get real.  Either way, this week has really made me think a lot about trying to compete next year.  I've never thought of CrossFit as a competitive avenue in my life, but I'm starting to realize that it's the competitive aspect that keeps pushing me.  Why not go all in...?

5.27.11

Regional WOD #6
20 Calorie Row
30 Burpees
40 Ground to Overhead 45# DBs
50 Toes to Bar
100 ft Walking Overhead Lunge 45#
150 ft Sprint

As rx'd: 16:12

This wrapped up the Regional Workouts for me, albeit spreading them over 5 days rather than 3.  This WOD was intimidating on paper, but was not nearly as bad as WOD 4 (the 400 rep nightmare).  I'm anxious to see just how wide the gap is between my times and the ones put up at the Regionals.  I know this will be a humbling experiment, but I plan to use it for motivation.  I know my weaknesses and what I need to work on.  Now I will find out just hard I have to push myself if I truly want to compete.

5.26.11

Squat Snatch Warmup
15 Skin the Cat
20 Double Unders for each time coming off the rings

Regional WOD #5
9-5-7
Muscle Ups
135# Squat Snatch

As rx'd: 14:28

The muscle ups were harder than expected for some reason.  I missed a few reps that cost me time.  This was the first time I've done squat snatches in a while and needless to say they were a bit rusty.  Again, a lot of missed reps.  But, I made sure that each rep was legit before counting it.  A lot of people in the box tonight, a lot of energy!

5.25.11

Strength
OHS Work
95x3, 135x3, 155x3, 185x2, 205x1(f)

Regional WOD 4
100 Pullups
100 KB Swings 1.5 Pood
100 Double Unders
100 OHS 95#

As rx'd: 29:31

The Regional WOD was a humbling experience.  The people  in charge of programming would be great candidates for any job involving interrogation tactics, because they have an uncanny ability to create torturous workouts.  OHS need a lot of work.  Pullups still have major room for improvement.

5.23.11

I'm back in East Lansing, which means my training has returned to Spartan CrossFit.  Over the next 3 weeks Michael asked us to keep a food log to finish up the box's Paleo Challenge.  The food log keeps track of a point system similar to the one Matt Chan used at his box earlier this year.  I'm looking forward to tracking exactly what I put in my body over a three week period.  I'm sure it will lead to greater accountability with my diet.

As for training, we are scheduled to do the Games Regional WODs this week.  WODs 1 and 2 were on the board today.

Thruster Ladder
Beginning with 95#, you have 20 seconds to complete 1 thruster
After a rep is successfully completed, you have 10 secs to attempt another thruster - increase weight in 5# increments

I finished at 205#

60 Secs Rest, Then:

1000m Run
30 HSPUs
1000m Row

As rx'd: 11:18

Finding a 1RM then almost immediately hitting a met-con was tough.  I really surprised myself how well I made it through the HSPUs, especially after the heavy thrusters.  And then the row at the end... pure gut-check.  Great WOD, glad to be back!

5.21.11

Nat and I did a partner WOD today at 573 Fitness. We did the movements in reverse order to space things out with the other groups.  We had to complete each movement before moving onto the next one.

50 Pullups
50 KB Swings 1.5 Pood
75 Situps
50 Pushups
50 Front Squats 95#
50 Back Extensions
50 HSPUs
30 Hang Squat Cleans 95#
50 K2E
50 Dips
30 Snatches 95#
75 Situps

We finished a little over 18 minutes.  I always like team WODs, but it was even better working alongside Nat.  She's always been a strong athlete, and she is catching onto the different movements quickly!  This has been my sixth day in a row, and I'm looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.  My next WOD will be back at Spartan Crossfit.

My times were nearly identical.  Not sure what that means, but I know I still hate situps.

How CrossFit Helped Me Finish Law School (and Vice Versa)

Last week I received my law degree from Michigan State University College of Law.  During the commencement, a professor spoke on the four major takeaways from law school.  His words have stuck with me, and I wanted to take some time to jot down the things that I learned over the most difficult three years of my life.  Because these lessons are personal, it probably comes as no surprise to those who know me that I have included CrossFit in the mix.  This makes sense, as I started CrossFit right around the same time I entered law school.  And honestly, the things I learned throughout law school overlap somewhat with what CrossFit has taught me.

Work Smart.  We've all heard the saying, "hard work pays off."  I'm not discounting that at all.  It has proven to be true in my life.  But, law school and CrossFit are full of people who work hard.  Both arenas are very performance driven, which creates a competitive atmosphere.  So, when everyone is working hard, how do you set yourself apart?  You must work smart.  CrossFit embraces this ideology.  Efficiency in movements is crucial in order to accomplish the most work in the shortest amount of time.  The same can be said with law school.  With the volume of work given to a law student, effective time management becomes essential.  There were so many times during school when I looked at my "To-Do" list for the day and thought there was no chance I could cross everything off before the sun came up again.  Whether facing a ridiculously long reading assignment or an intimidating chipper, I learned that strategy is just as important as dedication.  A good game plan often got me to a finish line that was out of sight at the outset.  Granted, it took me some time to learn this lesson.  Fortunately, I quickly learned that smashing my head through a wall did not make much sense when there was a doorway I could walk through.  Hard work cannot be discounted.  But, hard work that's been well thought out allows one's full potential to be realized.

Persevere.  Law school and CrossFit share a common thread - they are both extremely demanding.  Law school is like a mental "Murph" that lasts for three years.  CrossFit is like being called on in class everyday.  Each can beat you down, and each can be humbling.  There have been times when I have been disappointed with my results in each of these endeavors.  Whether it be a bad grade or a slower-than-anticipated time in a benchmark WOD, the feeling of failure carries a heavy weight.  The clock keeps ticking, though.  There's no time in either law school or CrossFit to feel sorry for yourself.  Both arenas offered me the true but harsh reality that failure is a part of life.  Those that can pick themselves up and brush off the dirt, or get back on the bar after a missed rep, are the ones that will succeed.  Maybe not today, but definitely tomorrow.  "Keep fighting the bully" a friend would always say.  On to the next one.

Embrace the Community.  Those who CrossFit and those who go to law school have separated themselves from the status quo somewhat.  By no means am I suggesting that because I have done both I am better than anyone else.  But, there are often times when a law student can only relate on an issue with another person who has been through it.  The same goes with CrossFit.  Each community has their own language, and once we get to talking with those inside our circle it leaves others shut out.  Outsiders do not understand how we can see someone wearing a CrossFit shirt or carrying a legal book and automatically strike up a conversation (often lasting longer than the outsider desires and including the previously mentioned "foreign" language).  For me, this is one of the best things about both communities.  I am able to automatically relate with people I have never met.  Mutual respect exists when a common goal is shared.  Ever try hitting a WOD by yourself?  How about studying solo for a final?  I would much rather be laboring through a task alongside someone else.  It's motivating, it's rewarding, and at the end of the day, it creates a genuine bond.

Resist Complacency.  Shameless plug for the title of my blog, right?  But seriously, becoming complacent is counter-intuitive for both law school and CrossFit.  One of my favorite slogans I have seen in a box reads "Better Than Yesterday."  And that's what we strive for.  In both law school and CrossFit, I always worked for improvement.  At times, this led me to overlook  and undervalue my accomplishments.  But, I'd rather be looking forward.  A lot of athletes from around the world are looking ahead to the CrossFit Games taking place the last weekend of July.  I will not be "Games Bound," at least not this year.  As a recent law school graduate, I have my own "Games" to prepare for that just so happen to occur during the same week - the bar exam.  But, like the competitors, I must use everyday to prepare.  Sure, I am proud to have graduated law school, but I cannot become complacent.  I'm confident that those athletes who qualified for Regionals feel the same way.  So, whether you're studying for the bar or prepping for the Games stay on your grind.  Wale coined the phrase "no days off."  Along those same lines, I say resist complacency.

Those are my four takeaways.  Reading over them, it is crazy how law school and CrossFit have paralleled each other in so many ways.  In sum, I'm thankful to have been blessed with both opportunities.  Each has taught me life lessons that have had an impact on who I am today.

5 Pushups

15 Pullups

5.17.11

I finally made it back home and had my first visit to 573 Fitness.  Kenny and Bob have a nice setup, especially given the short amount of time they have been open for business.  I will be sure to get some pictures tomorrow.

3 Rounds for Time:
10 DL 225#
15 HSPU
35 DU
400m Backwards Run

As rx'd: a little over 17:00

I have never ran backwards in a WOD.  It was definitely a different feeling, and I felt myself holding back at times because I was not comfortable with the movement.  That's what CrossFit is all about though, so I'm glad I got to practice it.  Also, I did all HSPU strict.  They are one of my weaknesses and I'm convinced that the only way I'm going to get better is if I increase my strength being in a handstand position.

5.16.11

I know, I know - I have really dropped the ball lately in keeping up with my training blog.  My friend Kenny told me that he was going to remove me from his blogroll if I didn't start posting again.  Truthfully, I got backed up with finals and graduation and all the craziness that occurs during the end of the semester.  But, I'm back at it.  We will see how long I stay consistent...

I dropped into CrossFit 26 and hit a WOD with Mike, one of the head trainers at the gym.  We decided to do one of the recent WODs from the main site.

21-15-9
24" Box Jumps
75# Power Snatch
Chest-2-Bar Pullups

I'm not positive what my time was, but it doesn't really matter because I mistakenly loaded the bar with 65# instead of the prescribed 75#.  As expected, the C2B pullups really slowed me down.  Overall, I felt like garbage throughout the workout.  This comes to no surprise though, because my diet has been pretty much garbage for the last week.  You get out what you put in.  I finished with a 3x5 Backsquat at 185, 225, 275.
